A question many of our clients ask us often is do they want concrete or pavers for their pool deck? We won't say one is better than the other, but we do have our opinions and professional recommendations. Over the years of being in the industry, we have gathered our own results on which are "better" based off our experience in construction. Starting with the pros & cons of one another that are listed below. Concrete Pros: -Cost efficient compared to pavers -Various color selection -Various finishes (Ex. stamped, colored, sandblasted, saw cut, brushed, etc.) -Faster application in most cases from start to finish Cons: -Discoloration -Notorious for cracking -Technically "un-repairable" to match again the existing concrete -Along with possibilities of it cracking, its unpredictable from the day its poured and on Pavers Pros: -Various selection in color, shapes, and finishes -No cracks* -Easily repairable -Less discoloration -Can be great contrast to an existing deck -Permeable Cons: -Can shift over time -Joint sand may need refill after a few years -Color variation from pallet to pallet depending which paver selected Typically we recommend pavers. The pros listed above outweigh the rest in our opinions. You are less likely to run into problems in the future. Simply the easiness of repairing with pavers is a big one while not having to worry about them cracking. There is a large variety of paver selection available, take a look at our hardscape gallery to see the decks we've built throughout Orange County and the surrounding areas. Another option we often do is hybrid! Pavers and concrete can look great and often compliment one another to break up too much of one material. It is all about balance and we like to keep it at a balanced level our customers are happy with while staying consistent with the design. As you can see one could go either way, there is not a right or wrong deck. We tell our customers it comes down to; What is your goal with your backyard? What is your budget? Do the cons of one another weigh out the other? It also has to do with preference. Some may or may not like the look of a stamped concrete or of a paver stone, some may love them. Email us if you have any further questions!

In my opinion, I might get paved pool decks for my pool because of the various selections in colors that I can get to make it attractive. When you mentioned that they are easily repairable, I thought about possibly keeping spare pavers in case some get lost over time. Since there are no cracks that you'll find with paved pool decks, I'll have one installed by a paving contractor soon.

I like what you said about concrete and how it is more cost-efficient than pavers. Stamped concrete is cool because it can look like any design imaginable. My friend wants to get some stamped concrete for his patio, so I'll help him find a reliable contractor to work with.

A concrete or asphalt slab has basically one design: flat. You pour the concrete or have it poured, and you end up with a smooth, white surface. Thank you for making this such an awesome post!

Pavers have a higher starting cost than concrete. You might be wondering what pavers are. Pavers are blocks, stones, or bricks that are used to cover an outdoor space like a driveway or patio. While individual pavers are not expensive, paver installation takes more time and effort than concrete pouring. Pavers can cost anywhere from $8 to $25 per square foot up front, whereas concrete costs from $3 to $6 per square foot. If you're on a tight budget, concrete may be the ideal option for a quick home renovation project—just keep in mind that you'll likely need to set aside money for maintenance and repairs in the future.

Cost efficiency really matters a lot to us here at home, so getting upgrades with materials that have a lot of it is essential. Concrete could be the one for us to use since it can also have some decorative touches added to it at a minimal price. I'll work with a concrete expert for sure so they can help us start this project.

When choosing between concrete and pavers for your pool deck, there are a few things to consider. Pavers are typically more expensive than concrete, but they offer a more custom look. Pavers can also be more difficult to install and require more maintenance than concrete. However, pavers are more durable than concrete and can last longer if properly cared for. Ultimately, the decision between concrete and pavers for your pool deck comes down to personal preference and budget.

You made an interesting point when you talked about how concrete has a fast application in most cases. If you are needing to purchase concrete, it seems like it would be a good idea to find a pumping contractor that has mixes that are ready to go. As far as I know, there are companies that have concrete mixes that are ready to be pumped at any time.

I like that you mentioned the various types of finishes for concrete such as stamped, colored, sandblasted, saw cut, and more aside from being an affordable choice. This made me remember that I loved the design of custom-stamped concrete I saw in a magazine before. So I think I might go for that and describe it to a contractor that I can find to see if they can replicate that from describing it from my memory.

These are really good pros and cons listed. Yes 100% agree on pavers being better, and if concrete is really needed hybrid is the way to go.
